For a while now, my Logitech MX Master 3 caused the mouse pointer to intermittent freeze while scrolling, which is hugely annoying. Every couple of minutes or so, I could not move the mouse pointer for a second of 3 which happened throughout the day. I came to a point to almost buy a new one, since the freeze was present on every device I used the mouse.

While looking for a fix I saw multiple reasons mouse pointer issues could occur. Let’s go through them.

1: Update software, firmware and reset to defaults

Install or update to the latest Logitech Options software on your Windows of macOS device.

In the Options+ software shown below, open the mouse properties > “Settings”. Perform these tasks:

  1. Update mouse firmware
  2. Update Receiver firmware
  3. Restore to Default

2: Disable Logitech Flow

In the properties of the mouse config I discovered that Logitech Flow was configured, but that the (second) paired device I configured a while ago for testing was not reachable. This made me think if it could relate to the unresponsiveness.

Logitech Flow is part of the Options software which enables cross-computer control and file sharing for supported mouse models like the MX Master series and supports Windows and macOS devices.

After deleting the paired device in the Flow configuration screen and subsequently disabling Flow entirely, the mouse pointer unresponsiveness seemed to be solved for a while, but unfortunately came back.

After deletion of the partner device, the Flow config screen should look like below.

3: Disable Logitech SmartShift

At a couple of places (of which this Reddit post) I read that disabling (or lowering speed) of the SmartShift feature could fix the mouse pointer freeze.

In the Options+ software open the mouse properties > “Point and Scroll” and disable SmartShift. For now, this seems to work for me.

To conclude

By going throught this guide there’s a good chance the freeze of you mouse pointer is fixed. This made my day 😃, saves some bucks and hopefully fixes your issue if you’re experiencing the same.

In some case it could also be related to a loose wire within the mouse. Check the linked Reddit post below for more info.

Cheers, Daniel
